Freedom Demonstrates the Love of God

How do we demonstrate the extravagant love of God?

It’s through freedom.

It's allowing people to be who they are, who God created them to be, cultivating that and releasing them to do it, whatever that looks like.

Yes, it can get messy. If we create a culture of forgiveness and freedom, when it gets messy, we can clean up our own messes as well as help someone else clean theirs up.

It’s what Jesus did with his disciples. Jesus' disciples were allowed to question things, ask questions and try stuff. I've said this a million times, but in the great commission Jesus acknowledged their unbelief and hardness of heart. In the very next vs. he releases them to go into the whole world.

Jesus demonstrated incredible trust in his disciples. He gave them responsibility for humanity. Jesus entrusted them with the gospel message and believed in their ability to represent him. Jesus gave his disciples stewardship of the kingdom of God and the care of the earth, regardless of their human frailty, current state and ability to perform.

We need to get over the performance thing. Love costs something, and if it doesn't cost something, it is a convenience and not a covenant. A contract is broken when one or both parties fails in regards to the terms of the agreement and success is based on performance and not relationship. A covenant says, I will give 100% regardless of the other party's ability to produce or give back.

Covenant is a commitment to love radically, dream incessantly and pursue passionately until . . . Not only do we need that kind of love, as followers of Christ we are obligated to give that kind of love. What does that look like today? A lot of what I teach here is to provoke you in some ways, not to provoke you to anger, but to provoke you to pursue God with everything that you are.

What does provoking you look like? As my dear friend Tyler Johnson would say, it would mean, "having a barbeque". Barbequing the sacred cows, because we all have them don't we?”

It's time for a change in the way we operate in the kingdom of God in a way that advances people so that they can advance the kingdom in the way that he created them.

When we as leaders, connect people with the Holy Spirit and allow him to do His work, He will lead them into all truth. He will produce inside of them the fruits of the Spirit.

Galatians 5:22 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who [k]belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

The Holy Spirit is much more efficient at this than we ever could be.

What does love look like?

The Family Business

While I was out doing everyday things and minding my own business, or so I thought there was a suddenly kind of moment.

There is always an AND SUDDENLY.

I was out with one of my children at the grocery store. While I was being checked out at the register, the checker asked me if I wanted to contribute to breast cancer research. All I said was, "no thanks, not today”.

What I didn't say was that I had relatives with cancer currently and had ministered to many with cancer, and post cancer survivors. I also didn't say that I had seen enough damage from cancer in my lifetime and was intent on seeing it disappear in my day.

There was a long line behind me and had no intention of opening a can of worms, like the c word topic.

And suddenly, she started "sharing" her heart about the ravages of breast cancer in her sister's life and how it devastated her family when her brother-in-law left her sister penniless, etc.

Remember, there was a long line behind my daughter and I. We had an audience.

In the moment all I could think to do was look her in the eyes and say, " I am so sorry for your loss and pain, you need to know that you are loved, so is your sister and her family. There is peace for you and you are not forgotten. Thank you for being there for your sister. You are greatly appreciated, you need to know that your life matters."

She thanked me as tears rolled down her face. I told her I'd better let her get back to work, she had a line of people who needed her and appreciated her service.

We walked away. My daughter asked me, "Does this happen everywhere you go? Do random people just share their personal stuff on you like that? What is that?"

All I could say is that there are a lot of hurting people out there who need love and affection. Those are invitations to love people who need love and encouragement right where they are.

Those events that seem like they are the "and suddenly" moments that seem like random interruptions while you are minding your own business. Those are invitations into the family business.

The Father's business is the family business that you inherited.

You have the privilege of spending your inheritance anyway you want.

Love is your currency.
